There are those who love to ride and those love being part of a race. We are happy when riders want to race or simply want to ride. Our categories are explained below.
We know for most the Old Mutual go2berg is a tough rewarding ride but for many it is also an awesome race across South Africa.
Our aim is to be one of the best solo stage races for all age groups.
Our racing categories are solo and mixed open.
You can still ride in a big a group but you will be timed as solo rider or mixed category only. See racing categories below. We will have prize money and prizes in all racing categories. For more info on prize money contact craig@go2berg.co.za
Only sections with 10 or more riders will constitute a racing category.

E bikes, tandems, and more
We are E Bike friendly for those who are friendly E bikers.
This is our E Bike E thos…if you like it, then go2berg is for you.
We want E bikers to experience the best of South Africa with other riders. We have had couples who never ride together doing go2berg together. We have had groups of mates some fit, some not so fit riding together. It can work brilliantly but there does need to be some lekker rules in place.
Bobby, a Joburg lawyer, decided to ride with a big group – he works flippin hard and did not have time to train. Bobby did go2berg 2024 on an E bike – he did not rush to get ahead – he savoured every K of this magnificent country with his group…..if you are like Bobby then enter.
John and Tracy, a happily married couple rode together on E bikes and they took photos, chatted to the farmers at water points and made sure they drew their day out, knowing they had some extra power to finish when they wanted to. Their motto was no rush just be lekker. If you are like John and Tracy enter.
That is why from 2025 we will have one battery policy. It means you need to ride mostly in Eco mode and you will be fine. This will bring in a wonderful challenge aspect. If you don’t think you can make it on one battery, then train harder it will be worth it.
E Bikers will be asked to be part of “our media crew” for 2025 and will need to do 10 photographs per day to be handed to our media team after each stage. The best pics of the week will win fun prizes.
We will not have a racing category for E bikes due to the nature of these bikes and variation of models, battery power etc. E Bikes are perfect if you want to ride with a stronger partner, or just enjoy the route and the people without rushing.
We have an E bike hire solution for international and local riders who want full-service package.
Tandems and single speed
Should we get enough interest from tandems and single speed riders we will form a category with loads of enthusiasm. We will need 5 tandems and 10 single speed riders to have a category.

Beef category
The Beef category is a weight division for South African mountain biking! Riders need to weigh at least 100 kgs in order to qualify.
