13 Sept 2024 - Frankfort - Registration / Day 0

Frankfort is a small farming town situated on the banks of the Wilge River in the Free State. The town was laid out in 1869 on the farm Roodepoort, and named Frankfurt (after Frankfurt-am-Main in Germany) by Albert van Gordon. The town later received municipality status in 1896. Frankfort is the capital town to Villiers, Cornelia and Tweeling, called the Mafube Municipality. The main street is ‘Brand Street’, named after the 4th president of the Orange Free State, Sir Johannes Brand. During 1883, he visited the town and laid the cornerstone of the Dutch Reformed Church. This church was burnt down by British troops during the Anglo-Boer War. After the war it was rebuilt and inaugurated in 1918.

14 Sept 2024 - Reitz - Day 1

Founded in 1889 the town was previously known as Singer’s Post; its name was changed to Amsterdam, and again to its current name Reitz after the Orange Free State president, Francis William Reitz. Lying almost halfway between Bethlehem and Frankfort on Route 26 in the Free State, Reitz is a quaint little town that maintains a relatively low profile, other than the Bielie Mielie Festival in February, which is a festival celebrating mealies in thr predominantly maize-farming community – the town has one of the largest maize silos in the southern hemisphere and is a major maize growing community.

16 Sept 2024 - Sterkfontein - Day 3

As we cross over the Sterkfontein Dam – we will move a new race village location on the edge of the world at the Phat Chef – we will have tents up here but there is some great accommodation at the Chef and in the area.

The dam receives its water via the Tugela-Vaal Project which is a pumped-storage scheme involving the net transfer of up to 630 000 000m3 of water from KwaZulu-Natal. This is stored in the Sterkfontein Dam and released to the Vaal Dam via the Wilge River when needed. The Sterkfontein Dam is a highly effective reservoir, since it has the depth to store a large amount of water, with very little loss to evaporation. The dam wall contains 17 000 000m3 of material, making it the largest dam wall in South Africa with regard to volume, while the reservoir formed by the dam is the third largest in the country.

Winterton is a small town situated on the banks of the Tugela River in the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains, KwaZulu-Natal. It was founded in 1905 as Springfield when the Natal government built a weir across the Little Tugela River. The town later changed its name to Winterton in honour the secretary for agriculture, HD Winter. Winterton is a small town with only a primary school. It is close to the Second Boer War battle sites of Vaal Krantz and Spioenkop.
